We’re staying safe during COVID-19
Volunteering at a clinic gives volunteers the opportunity to work hands-on at Houston’s only Drive-Thru Clinic + Pet Food Bank. It can be a long, tiring day, but helping 100+ animals at each clinic keeps volunteers coming back.
Since the clinic is (essentially) a pop-up veterinary wellness clinic and food bank, it takes a big team to full off, all with different responsibilities. Positions available for volunteers include:
- Animal handling
- Check-in personnel
- Food bank distribution
- Distribution of flea preventative and dewormer
- Survey and traffic management
- Set up and tear down
Adoption Counselors (“ACs,” as we lovingly refer to them) help by calling potential adopters who have filled out an application. They’re some of the folx who conduct phone interviews, sending their notes back to the Adoptions Department for follow-up.
Volunteers with 20+ hours, who are interested in helping in this area, are trained by our Adoptions team.
The Friends For Life Behavior program is unlike any other (at least, that we’ve ever heard of — tell us if we’re wrong!). The Behavior Volunteering track allows volunteers to progress through levels of “BV” (i.e., Behavior Volunteer”). Once they reach the highest level, they can work toward taking a certification test with a number of reputable programs—they’re then certified Behavior Consultants!
For those volunteers interested in getting their BV journey started while at home, we’ll be providing an online BVI (“Behavior Volunteer Level I”) training video that they can watch, and practice with their animals at home.
Behavior Volunteers who become certified are also essential to our mission of providing Houstonians free behavior consulting to help them handle behavior challenges with their pets.
Our virtual team that make up the “Litter Line” provide consultations over the phone to help cat owners who are having litter box issues (the most common reason that cats are surrendered to shelters).
Fostering is definitely a form of volunteering. If you would like to foster a cat or dog, please fill out the foster application.
