Top Ten of 2018

September 12, 2018 by Friends For Life

There are many reasons to celebrate 2018. Here are our Top 10.

All data as of October 31, 2018.

We save seniors, tiny babies, heartworm positive dogs, animals needing surgery, those with behavior challenges, leukemia positive cats and many more who’d be lost.

75% of the animals we have adopted into loving homes would not meet the “adoptable” criteria in other programs.

10,571 lbs + 1,213 cans of free pet food was distributed to our neighbors struggling to feed their pets.

Our behavior team patiently works to reinforce good behavior in our adoptable animals. Behavior problems are the main reason animals are abandoned at shelters. That’s why our team also offers free behavior consults to neighbors who struggle with their pets.

6,158 hours of free behavior training was provided to dogs and cats.

We celebrate our “Blue Shirts” army of fantastic volunteers who provide animal care, clerical help, behavior training, cat trapping, adoption counseling and photography. This year, 820 volunteers contributed more than 20,000 hours.

12 full-time equivalent positions contributed by our volunteers — 20,318 hours of work!

Many animals arriving at Friends For Life are in poor health condition. We vaccinate, spay/neuter, microchip and de-worm all our animals. Many dogs need costly (but very effective) heartworm treatment, and many of our animals require life-saving surgeries.

560 hours of free services provided by volunteer vets

$81,891 spent on veterinary supplies and services

Fix Houston™ brings free spay/neuter services to pets in Houston’s underserved communities.96,940 estimated total number of births prevented since the start of Fix Houston™

A wall mural by artist Anat Ronen has turned our shelter into a photo-op destination.

PetSmart and El Gato Coffeehouse Cat Cafe both provide venues for our adoptable cats. We’re grateful for the 15-year relationship with PetSmart, and the new and exciting relationship with El Gato.

63 cats adopted from El Gato since our partnership began in February 2018.

When we stepped up and led animal care at George R. Brown Convention Center during Harvey, we created a national proof of concept for cohabitated shelters. Our manual is now published in collaboration with the American Red Cross and USDA.

In the end, it is your care and support that fuels us, Friends For Life Army! You foster, you drop off supplies, you attend our events. When our Food Bank runs low, you rush to refill it; when an animal needs a home, you welcome them.

For animals and humans alike, we are their support. Thank you for being ours.

Please consider making a year-end gift to help more animals in 2019:

  • $50 spays or neuters a cat through Fix Houston™
  • $100 provides 25 animals with vaccinations
  • $250 covers 25 doses of antibiotics
  • $500 supports heartworm treatment for one dog
  • $1,000 pays for one night of emergency medical care
