Fabio’s Second Chance

10:56 am by Nery Rubio

Most cats don’t know what a diagnosis means. They just know when a door closes, when a voice softens, when something changes.

Fabio felt that.

When he arrived at Friends For Life, he was a little unsure. New space, new smells, new people. If he had any idea what it meant to be FeLV-positive, it wouldn’t be surprising if he was scared. Because for so many cats, that diagnosis changes everything.

You see the happy rescue videos online all the time. The “before and after.” The second chances. The endings tied up neatly with a bow.

But there’s a quieter group of cats who don’t always get that moment.

Cats with FeLV.

Feline Leukemia Virus, or FeLV, is a virus that affects a cat’s immune system. It’s spread only through close contact between cats, things like grooming, sharing bowls, or prolonged time together. It does not affect humans or other species. And while it can make cats more vulnerable to illness, many FeLV+ cats live happy, comfortable lives for years with proper care and a low-stress environment.

It is not a death sentence.

But in many places, it’s treated like one.

At a lot of shelters, a positive FeLV test can mean there are no more chapters left to write. Not because the cat isn’t loving. Not because they aren’t adoptable. But because resources, space, and misconceptions make it hard to give them that chance.

That’s where Friends For Life does things differently.

Here, FeLV+ cats aren’t the end of the story. They are just…cats. Cats who still want attention, still chase toys, still lean into your hand like they’ve been waiting their whole life for that exact moment.

Cats like Fabio.

It didn’t take long for his personality to show up. Say his name, and he comes running. Open his space, and he’s already there, pressing his head into your hand before you even have a chance to reach for him. He doesn’t hesitate. He doesn’t hold back.

Fabio loves like nothing bad has ever happened to him.

And maybe that’s the part that gets you.

Because how do you look at a cat like that, full of trust, full of affection, and decide he doesn’t deserve more time? More comfort? More life?

You don’t.

So we don’t.

Fabio is getting ready to move into our FeLV+ room, a space just for cats like him. It’s a room full of big personalities, soft moments, and cats who, despite everything stacked against them, are some of the sweetest you’ll ever meet. Visitors always say the same thing when they walk in. These cats are so loving.

Of course they are.

They’re just cats.

“come on look at the camera”
“Just 5 more mins”
“waz up!”

Fabio doesn’t know he’s “different.” He just knows he likes pets, cozy spots, and being exactly where the people are. He deserves the kind of home where he gets a birthday cake every year, even if he only eats one bite. A home with too many beds he’ll probably ignore in favor of a cardboard box. A home where he is spoiled, safe, and loved for however long that may be.

And thanks to this program, that future is possible.

Friends For Life is the only shelter in Houston that takes in FeLV+ cats and commits to giving them that chance. Not just a place to stay, but a place to belong until they find their person.

Fabio is still waiting for his.

And when you meet him, you’ll probably understand why he and all FeLV+ cats are worth it.
