Kazoo’s story started like too many others. Last Thanksgiving, while a lot of folks were surrounded by food and family, he was out on his own, dumped, scared, and trying to survive.

But life had bigger plans for him.
When Kazoo came to Friends For Life, he needed time to relearn that people could be safe. He needed structure. Support. Training. Patience. And yes, someone willing to figure out why he sometimes peed in the house instead of giving up on him for it.
So we got to work. Behavior sessions, enrichment, practice, cheering him on for the small wins… all the things a lot of shelters don’t have the space or time to do.
Enter Bryan.
Bryan first met Kazoo early this year and signed on as a weekend foster. He didn’t flinch when we explained Kazoo’s quirks. He didn’t hesitate when we talked about his training plan. He just said, “Okay. Show me what he needs.”
Every weekend, Bryan picked up Kazoo.
Every weekend, Kazoo sprinted straight into Bryan’s arms like he’d been waiting all week.
And every weekend, Bryan learned a little more guided by our behavior team and powered by genuine enthusiasm to understand his new buddy.

Park trips. Fishing. Couch hangs. Learning. Growing. Trusting.
Then came the text we all knew was coming:
“I would like to adopt Kazoo.”
Cue the cheering from every corner of the shelter.
Bryan didn’t adopt a “perfect” dog. He adopted Kazoo, a dog who needed someone willing to learn his language, understand his needs, and love him not despite his quirks, but through them.
And that’s the magic.
At Friends For Life, we believe every animal deserves that chance, especially the ones who aren’t “plug-and-play.” The shy ones. The sensitive ones. The ones who need a little coaching… and a lot of heart.
Because having a best friend isn’t just about the fun stuff. It’s about learning their quirks, celebrating their wins, helping them feel safe, and building a life together. Kazoo didn’t need perfect. He needed effort. He needed curiosity. He needed someone who said, “Teach me how to be what he needs.”

So here’s to Kazoo.
Here’s to Bryan.
And here’s to every animal waiting for their person—the one who doesn’t walk away when things aren’t easy, but leans in with kindness and patience and a willingness to learn.
If you’re ready to be someone’s Bryan, we’ve got some friends who would love to meet you.
