Nicholas survived a horrifying night.
Nicholas, a stray pup, had been surviving alongside a man living on the streets. The man shared his food and bedding with the pup. But life in a homeless camp is dangerous. There’s little privacy and no real safety. Nicholas wandered off last night, and when he came back this morning, his tail had been butchered off, leaving a horrific open wound.
The man knew Nicholas needed medical help, but without resources or transportation, he didn’t know what else to do and hoped someone could help. The story was passed along until it reached Claire Richards at Hardy & Nance Studios, who immediately stepped in.

When Nicholas arrived at Friends For Life, we treated his wounds and helped manage his pain. Just six months old, he soaked up every bit of affection and loved everyone he met. You’d never know what he had just been through. He’s scheduled for a morning vet appointment, and we have every reason to believe he’ll be okay.
Here’s to everyone who treats animals with kindness and empathy. And here’s to Claire, for getting this boy to safety.
Heal quickly, little man. There’s a good future ahead.
— UPDATE (12/19/25) —
Nicholas is back from the veterinary hospital.

To give him the best chance to heal, the remaining portion of his injured tail had to be surgically amputated. He came through surgery like a champ and is now back with us—sleepy from his medication, comfortable, and finally able to rest. After everything he’s been through, this sweet boy is safe, deeply cared for, and on the road to recovery.
