Friends For Life supporter and advocate Robert Fisher, RN, embodies a lifetime of service and dedication to animal welfare. As a registered nurse and former Marine, Robert’s journey to becoming a devoted advocate for animals highlights his unyielding compassion and determination to create lasting change. Moving from healthcare to animal welfare, he illustrates how one person’s dedication can inspire others and leave a meaningful impact on countless lives.
From a young age, Robert’s empathy for animals was evident. “I’ve always had a soft spot for animals,” he reflects. “Growing up, I was that kid who would stop to help any creature in need. Whether it was a stray cat or an injured bird, I couldn’t turn a blind eye.” This natural compassion became a guiding force throughout his life, motivating him to build a world where every animal is treated with kindness and respect.
Robert’s path to advocacy began in the Marine Corps, where he served as both an infantryman and machinist. His years in the military instilled qualities of resilience, discipline, and a profound sense of service—values that now shape his work with animals. “Service is about dedication to something greater than yourself,” he explains. “For me, animals are that cause.” These experiences not only strengthened his commitment to helping vulnerable animals but also gave him a unique perspective as an advocate, ready to stand up for those without a voice.
After his military service, Robert transitioned to healthcare, spending many years as a registered nurse in an emergency care unit. Working with patients gave him a deep appreciation for empathy and compassion, qualities he would later bring to his work with animals. “My years in nursing taught me the importance of empathy and connection,” he recalls, “and I knew I wanted to apply that same compassion to animals in need.” His medical background provides him with distinctive insights into animal welfare, enabling him to speak on behalf of those who cannot advocate for themselves.
One defining experience for Robert was witnessing Friends For Life’s heroic response to Hurricane Harvey. During the crisis, our shelter set up a unique cohabitation shelter, allowing families to stay with their pets when they needed them most. “Seeing people able to keep their beloved pets close during such a traumatic time—that’s what humane work is all about,” Robert reflects. This initiative, and others like it, continue to inspire him to fight for a world where animals are safe, respected, and cared for in times of need.
Robert firmly believes that creating a compassionate world for animals starts with education, advocacy, and community involvement. “Awareness is the first step. When people realize the impact they can have, they’re more likely to take action,” he emphasizes. His goal is to foster a culture of empathy, where everyone feels empowered to contribute to animal welfare, whether by volunteering, raising awareness, or supporting animal-focused organizations. “There’s a place for everyone in this work. Every action counts.”
Beyond his professional commitments, Robert’s dedication to animals has a deeply personal resonance. He shares a moving story about a dog named Callie, who comforted him during a difficult period following the loss of a close friend. “Callie’s presence brought me solace during one of the most challenging times in my life,” he says. “Her unconditional love reminded me of the profound bond between humans and animals.” This experience renewed his commitment to advocating for animals, inspiring him to ensure that every creature receives the love and care they deserve.
Robert’s unwavering commitment to animal welfare leaves a lasting impression on everyone he meets. He encourages others to consider how they can make a difference, no matter how small. “I envision a future where all animals are treated with kindness and compassion. Through education, advocacy, and community involvement, I believe we can make a significant impact,” he says. His story is a powerful reminder that shared compassion can profoundly influence the lives of both humans and animals.
Robert Fisher’s dedication to animals is truly inspiring, and his contributions make him an invaluable part of the Friends For Life community. We are honored and grateful to have him as our Chair for this year’s Friends For Life Studio Fifty-Fur Fundraising Gala. Following his example, each of us can help create a kinder world for animals, one compassionate act at a time.
